Know The Difference : Fume Hood vs Bio Safety Cabinet

Fume Hoods & BSC are safety devices for the laboratory. Yet, the two are different in their applications.

FUME HOOD BIO SAFETY CABINET
What is it used for? Fume hood removes the contaminants such as gases & vapours from the lab BSC removes particles such as pathogens from the air stream
How do they work? Fume hood works on diluting the air of contaminants BSC works on cleaning the air of particulates
Whom do they protect? Fume hoods protect the lab users BSC protects lab users, samples, and the environment
How do they protect? Fume hoods draw the air and the contaminants from the user zone and exhausts it outside the lab BSC draws air through a high-efficiency HEPA filter to remove the particulate matter. The air usually circles back into the lab
What are the variants available? Fume hood configuration varies by the application and the experiments conducted.

Common variants are – Benchtop, Distillation, Floor Mounted, Radioisotope, and Perchloric fume hoods

BSCs are categorised into 3 variants depending on the airflow pattern – Class I, Class II, and Class III.

All three variants have HEPA filters.
